Watercooler TV for the Week Ahead

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 15

Coronado (Hallmark Channel, 9 p.m. ET) Premiere. When her fiancé is kidnapped and taken to an unstable Central American country, a wealthy young woman from Beverly Hills teams with a cynical news reporter to find her man. Off to War (Discovery Times Channel, 10 p.m. ET) Season Premiere. After a hiatus of more than one year the long awaited second season of this acclaimed documentary series finally begins. Off to War movingly chronicles the lives of National Guardsmen from the small town of Clarksville, Arkansas, unexpectedly called to service in Iraq, and the emotional impact their sudden departures have on their families back home. Following tonight's season premiere, new episodes will be telecast every Saturday at 10 p.m. ET over the next six weeks. (For further information on this Must-See series read the October 13 edition of Jack Myers Entertainment Report, available on www.MediaVillage.com.) As a refresher for fans and an introduction for new viewers, Discovery Times Channel will run the three episodes that comprised the first season of this series tonight beginning at 7 p.m. ET.

The Contender Rematch (ESPN, 11 p.m. ET) Live. Sergio "The Latin Snake" Mora, winner of season one of the Mark Burnett reality drama The Contender, takes on runner-up Peter "The Pride of Providence" Manfredo, Jr. in a bout telecast live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Dan Patrick hosts. This event will also include match-ups featuring other boxers who competed in The Contender. This is the first of three scheduled fights presented by ESPN, Mark Burnett and DreamWorks Television leading up to the launch of the second season of The Contender on ESPN in April 2006.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 16

The West Wing (NBC, 8 p.m. ET) The NASA "leak" is revealed and, teases NBC, it's not who you think. That means it isn't CJ -- and that would make the final shot of a guilty looking CJ at the end of the sixth season highly misleading indeed. And that's exactly the kind of cheap cheat that drives even more viewers away from a once-vital franchise on the decline. But since we're still with this show, and totally caught up in the campaign maneuverings both of Matt Santos and Arnold Vinick, we're dying to know who let slip that sensitive information about NASA to the press.

Walker, Texas Ranger: Trial by Fire (CBS, 9 p.m. ET) Premiere. Chuck Norris stars once again as Texas Ranger Cordell Walker, the old-fashioned, no-nonsense hero he played in the 1993-2001 CBS series Walker, Texas Ranger and in two previous made-for-television movies, in this action-adventure about the search for a desperate 13-year-old boy on the run from a crime syndicate. Sheree J. Wilson, Judson Mills and Clarence Gilyard, who co-starred with Norris in the series, return as D.A. Alex Cahill, ranger Judson Mills and ranger James Trivette, respectively. Janine Turner (Northern Exposure) also stars as a forensics expert.

Breaking Bonaduce (VH1, 10 p.m. ET) Television's most disturbing (and, arguably, most daring) celebrity reality series continues as former Partridge Family star Danny Bonaduce reluctantly agrees to enter rehab -- this after plunging ever deeper into alcohol, drug and steroid abuse (all captured on camera) and, in a moment of intense rage and despair, slitting his wrists.

MONDAY, OCTOBER 17

Miss Seventeen (MTV, 10:30 p.m. ET) Series Premiere. In MTV's newest reality series featuring self-absorbed teenage girls, seventeen young women from around the country will live under one roof and compete in real-life situations designed to test their intelligence, leadership, loyalty, kindness, good judgment, honesty, etc., all hoping to be selected for the title of Miss Seventeen. Each week, one of them will be eliminated by Seventeen magazine editor-in-chief Atoosa Rubenstein, who created this show. But, in a twist -- and you knew there had to be one -- the girls don't realize that they are also being judged on their behavior when the cameras aren't rolling. The winner receives a college scholarship, an internship at Seventeen and 15 minutes of fame as a cover subject for the magazine.

The Colbert Report (Comedy Central, 11:30 p.m. ET) Series Premiere. Best known as the senior correspondent of Jon Stewart's The Daily Show, Stephen Colbert now has his own spin-off of sorts with this half-hour series in which he processes the news of the day. The Colbert Report will run on Comedy Central Monday-Thursday at 11:30 p.m. ET immediately following Stewart's show, making for an hour of fake news programming that kids and television critics alike will likely continue to mistake for the real thing. The special guest on tonight's premiere is Stone Phillips, the Dateline NBC anchor whose mannerisms inform Colbert's persona on both The Daily Show and The Colbert Report.

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 18

A Walk in Your Shoes: Katrina's Aftermath (The N, 9 p.m. ET) Premiere. Filmed just ten days after the storm struck, this edition of The N's documentary franchise A Walk in Your Shoes looks at the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina from the perspective of five teenagers who lost their homes and schools and were separated from their friends.

The Amazing Race: Family Edition (CBS, 9 p.m. ET) An intense rivalry develops between two of the competing families in this latest edition of CBS' three-time Emmy Award-winning reality competition series. There has been some griping from longtime fans and critics about the fact that this run of Race has so far remained in America, rather than taking viewers on the usual high-speed and highly educational tour of foreign lands. But give it credit for showing us some of the hidden wonders in our own back yard, like the World's Largest Office Chair located in Anniston, Alabama, and featured in tonight's show. Among this episode's other highlights: One member of one family buckles under the pressure of the race and has a breakdown; one family freaks over a particular task and another moons its competitors. CBS will likely digitally blur their bare backsides in the interest of good taste (and staying under the radar of the FCC) but that hasn't stopped the network from promoting the fact the heinies will be exposed.

My Name is Earl (NBC, 9 p.m. ET) In one of the happier developments of the 2005-06 season to date, My Name is Earl has become the most successful new broadcast comedy of the year. In this episode, Earl teaches English as a second language to make amends for previously making fun of people with accents and tries to convince an old friend to practice his unique approach to establishing karmic harmony. Jason Lee stars. Giovanni Ribisi is the guest star.

Nip/Tuck (FX, 10 p.m. ET) Christian becomes the prime suspect in the Carver case after the vicious attack that closed last week's episode. We know the Carver isn't Christian, because Christian himself was paralyzed, slashed and raped by the Carver at the end of last season. But we're pretty sure we know the monster's identity after last week's harrowing story … and if we're right, we're not happy about it at all. Also in this episode: An HIV-positive man suffering from facial wasting seeks to have his once-healthy appearance restored.

Women Rock! Our Journey with Melissa Etheridge (Lifetime, 11 p.m. ET) Premiere. Today is Lifetime's annual Breast Cancer Awareness Day, and the network will present a full day of programming, public service announcements, fact-filled screen crawls and educational interstitials promoting breast cancer detection and overall awareness. (The network's campaign is actually running throughout October to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month.) Melissa Etheridge will top off the day as host of the network's annual WomenRock! event, which was taped on September 29 in Los Angeles. Two-time Grammy Award winner Etheridge will perform songs from her new album, Greatest Hits the Road Less Traveled, and share details about her own recent battle with breast cancer, her triumphant return to performing at the 2005 Grammys and the experience of watching her grandmother die from the disease. Incidentally, this is the 11th year of Lifetime's ongoing multi-media and grassroots campaign Our Lifetime Commitment: Stop Breast Cancer for Life, designed to provide women with the most up-to-date and comprehensive information available about the disease.

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 19

Invasion (ABC, 10 p.m. ET) ABC's entry in this season's burgeoning "aliens-among-us" trend gets creepier and creepier with each passing episode, especially when Kari Matchett and William Fichtner are on screen as Dr. Mariel Underlay and her husband, Sheriff Tom Underlay. Maybe that's because Mariel may not be Mariel, or even a human, for that matter, and the increasingly mysterious Tom is obviously up to something that can't be good.

2005 Black Movie Awards (TNT, 10 p.m. ET) Premiere. Cedric the Entertainer hosts this awards show that honors creative achievements by African Americans in feature-length movies, both in front of and behind the camera, as well as the movies themselves. Highlights of the event include Sidney Poitier receiving the Distinguished Career Achievement Award for his work as an actor, writer and director; Kimberly Elise being honored with the Rising Star Award for her work in Diary of a Mad Black Woman; and the induction of the 1985 film adaptation of Alice Walker's The Color Purple into the Black Movie Awards Classic Cinema Hall of Fame.

South Park (Comedy Central, 10 p.m. ET) Return. This is the first episode of the second half of the ninth season of South Park, still the funniest series on television -- and still the most difficult to get information about in advance of telecast. That's because its supernaturally creative creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone work on each episode right up to the last possible minute, which often results in a degree of urgent topicality not typically seen in most scripted television series. So we haven't a clue what tonight's second half of the ninth season-opener is about, but we're guessing it's got something to do with recent news or pop cultural events.

Drawn Together (Comedy Central, 10:30 p.m. ET) Season Premiere. The second season of this animated reality series featuring characters from different genres of animation begins where last year's cliffhanger left off, as a helicopter carrying the entire cast crash-lands on a Hawaiian island. An encounter with Survivor host Jeff Probst and his own tribe follows; then, one of the Drawn Together housemates is left behind as the others hurry back to Hollywood expecting to enjoy instant stardom.

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 20

ER (NBC, 10 p.m. ET) Last week, Kristen Johnston joined this veteran medical drama in the recurring role of Nurse Manager Eve Payton. Tonight, John Leguizamo begins a 12-episode arc as Supervising Physician Victor Clemente, who tests the competence of the County General emergency room staff by pretending to be a patient and seeks to educate his new colleagues in the use of cutting edge medical technology.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 21

American Revolutions: Country Comedy (CMT, 8 p.m. ET) Premiere. The history of country humor, from Minnie Pearl and the Grand Ole Opry to Hee Haw to Larry the Cable Guy, is the subject of this largely nostalgic two-hour documentary. In addition to the legendary Miss Pearl, the performers profiled include Andy Griffith, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Ray Stevens and Jerry Clower. Jeff Foxworthy, Bill Engvall, Rodney Carrington, Buck Owens, Roy Clark, Lulu Roman, Brad Paisley, Clint Black, Alison Krauss and Ricky Skaggs are among the personalities interviewed.

Numb3rs (CBS, 10 p.m. ET) Don and his team uncover a plan to assassinate a Colombian exile living in the United States. Former Guiding Light star Jordi Vilasuso, who won an Emmy Award for his work on that series, is the guest star.
