“Stereotypes can be good, stereotypes can be bad. Stereotypes normally put people into little tiny boxes.” So began the talk Aline Santos, Global EVP Marketing and Head of Diversity and Inclusion at Unilever gave at the inaugural Advancing Diversity Honors held January 10 during CES. As an Honoree accepting on behalf of Unilever’s Unstereotype initiative, Santos described how marketers use boxes to identify groups. She spoke about the limits of stereotypes and how the need to see people as individuals – to Unstereotype – is a driving force in moving our culture forward.

Partnering with UN Women, Santos launched the #Unstereotype Alliance, an industry wide initiative with 24 other leading organizations to eradicate stereotypes in advertising globally, creating impact at scale. According to Santos, "We don't view diversity and inclusion as a competitive advantage," however, she shares that companies creating progressive, stereotype-challenging ads typically see a 25% lift in terms of branded impact and engagement.
