Damages' Noah Bean Speaks About the Death of His Character David Connor

David Connor ends up dead.

Anyone who watches FX's Damages knows, contrary to what it may sound like, that is not a spoiler. Damages promises viewers a good ending by telling it to us in the first episode, and has captivated its audience enough to cause us to want to go along for the ride. We know Noah Bean's character David Connor ends up dead in a bathtub, covered in blood, dead as can be. Now we just want to know how he got there.

For Noah Bean, Damages is his most high profile role to date. Thus, knowing that he might potentially (who knows what's going to happen on this show?) not have a very long run is not the best news for the actor. "At first I was thrilled. I thought, 'This is great! I get one season on this great show.' Then once we started shooting I was like, 'Ugh damn it, this sucks. It's so great - it's just gotten better and better and better. It's a little bit of a bummer," Bean said.

Like the viewers, Bean explained, "I really don't have any idea what's going to happen either, which is kind of amazing." That being said, the character of David still has a lot of story to tell. "I think it's going to be sort of fascinating. I think the writers and our creators have some really cool story lines that are going to build up to the end of the season... We kind of have no idea where this may go. This may not be the complete end of David Connor, although I don't think I'm going to be coming back to life."

So what do we know about Damages so far? We know that David Connor ends up dead, but we don't know who causes his death. Episode two makes us think that girlfriend Ellen did it with the Statue of Liberty bookend, but that was most likely a red herring. We know that Patty Hewes (Glenn Close) is more evil than Ellen realizes, as we've seen she was the one behind Saffron's death. We think Arthur Frobisher (Ted Danson) is good one minute, until we see him cheating on his wife, snorting coke, and putting a hit out on Katie. We also find out that Katie has many secrets of her own. And that's just the start of it.

While Bean says that the cast has been given "strong warnings to not give away too much," he did go into a tiny bit of detail on what we can expect from his character, David Connor. "I start to get a little more flushed out especially into episodes four, five and six... It [David and Ellen's relationship] started us on this kind of young, happy couple, this power couple, a doctor and a lawyer, and it's a little vanilla at times, I'd think. But we definitely get tested individually and in our relationship... The landscape and the story gets more dangerous as the episodes move on... where David is kind of the one who is more black and white, right and wrong, whereas all these characters kind of live in the grey zone. They've definitely sort of brought David into that. I get into more precarious situations and obviously I end up in some life threatening situations since we all know what happens."

He continued, "There's some really cool stuff. I know that's sort of lame to say, but there's going to be really cool stuff to happen. It's amazing... New people come into the fold who have some links to the whole situation with Frobisher and everybody."

"Certain things will get revealed, but a lot of things get so complicated that it really takes time to understand why certain things have happened and those two timelines do continue to stay - the six months earlier where the bulk of the show is and the flash forwards with Ellen being with the police and dealing with the post-David's murder, and in both of those worlds, things start to link up," Bean said.

Bean also promised that we will see his character having some run-ins with Patty Hewes, played by Glenn Close. His feeling about this? "Thankfully, for myself, the actor... It's a dream come true. It's fantastic."* Yet Bean is also grateful to be working with the rest of the cast, including Ted Danson and Zeljko Ivanek. "If Ted Danson wanted to go to a bar and sing show tunes with him, I'd do it," Bean quipped. As for Ivanek, Bean said, "He is one of my favorite actors." Bean also said that he and Rose Byrne, who plays his girlfriend Ellen, have "become great friends and hang out all the time."

Just like viewers, even Bean can't help but get hooked by Damages. "I was watching the first two episodes with friends," he said, "and I forgot I was in it. I was totally engrossed in it. It's a really fun whodunit. There's going to be lots of opinions and question marks and slowly things will start to get answered."

Even though we know that Noah Bean's days on Damages are numbered, the show is guaranteed to help him make a name for himself. Damages is a unique and gripping show, and is sure to stick around for seasons to come. And although David Connor's character won't be around forever, let's hope that this is just the beginning for Noah Bean.

*Hopefully Noah Bean is a lot cooler than me when it comes to Glenn Close. In college I worked in a kitchen store called Consider the Cook and Close came in to purchase a tray as a present. I was so star struck that I ripped two boxes while attempting to wrap the tray. Needless to say, I looked like an idiot. I hope Close forgives me!
