The Seattle Seahawks' vaunted “12th man” and the crowd noise they generate make their home field the loudest of any stadium in the NFL. That sound is beginning to reverberate across the nation, as the Seahawks moved up 11 places in terms of their word of mouth ranking among the NFL’s 32 teams. Nevertheless, the Denver Broncos have had a clear word of mouth lead over the Seahawks, nationwide, over the course of this football season.

These are the season-to-date statistics about word of mouth about the NFL, according to Keller Fay’s TalkTrack which provides ongoing word of mouth tracking including both offline conversations as well as online chatter.

More specifically, Denver jumped into the ranks of top 5 most talked NFL teams this season, rising to the #4 spot from #8 a year ago. Only the perennial #1 Dallas Cowboys (“America’s team”), the Green Bay Packers and the New England Patriots had more people talking about them this year. The Chicago Bears round out the top 5.

Seattle, with its 11 place gain in the rankings, now stands at the 13th most talked about team in the NFL.

Denver enjoys a two-to-one advantage over Seattle in terms of word of mouth, with an average of 11.5 million Americans talking per week about the Broncos versus 5.6 million weekly talkers about the Seahawks.

In terms of demographics, both Denver and Seattle enjoy more WOM among men than women – not surprisingly; however, Denver’s WOM-base is somewhat more evenly balanced between men and women, whereas Seattle skews more heavily toward males than Denver’s.

The biggest demographic difference between the two teams is their regional word of mouth. While both come from the Western region of the US, Seattle’s word of mouth is heavily concentrated in the West and is minimal in the rest of the country. Denver’s word of mouth is also stronger in the West than elsewhere. In fact, among Westerner’s Denver still enjoys a WOM advantage over Seattle, although the difference is not as great as the national difference. Elsewhere in the US, however, Denver is far more talked about and the gap between the two teams is particularly large in the Midwest.

In terms of overall word of mouth for the NFL, a very impressive 136 million people talked weekly about the league or its teams during the season, making it far and away the most talked about sports league. However, word of mouth levels were down somewhat from the last season, when 140 million were talking weekly.

Now it’s on to MetLife Stadium, and we will see who gets the last word.
