This week, on Mindshare’s Culture Vulture Live, Karina Marinha looks at a new addition to your workout -- GPS art.

GPS art is a new trend that’s emerged for runners and bikers across the globe. Using fitness apps, more and more people are turning their running or biking paths into digital designs.

How do they do it? Most of these GPS artists plan their routes out in advance. They look at maps to figure out which roads to take in order to create the design of their choosing. It can be anything from a movie character to your pet to a written message and more. Then, while they’re on the move, fitness apps will track their routes in real-time. The result is art that you can show off online. In fact, some people have created hundreds of designs.

Ironically, GPS art actually follows a trend that we’ve been tracking at Mindshare called Couch Creativity. Today, it’s become much easier for consumers to be creative across all aspects of their lives. Someone who may not have considered themselves an artist before has more opportunities to show off what inspires them. Just look at the popularity of things like Instagram filters and Pinterest.

Brands and marketers should find ways to leverage these behaviors; to help consumers both produce and show off their inspiration. For example, you can invite them to co-create ideas, or to curate products like you see with services such as BirchBox and StitchFix.
