The Neptune Watch (www.neptunepine.com) is the creation of its founder and CEO Simon Tian, a 19-year old dropout who decided he was going to "create a smartwatch as powerful and capable as a smartphone ." He went to China to visit factories to explore the potential for his intended design. Within the first 24 hours of starting a Kickstarter campaign to raise money to build and launch his product, he achieved his initial target funding goal of $100,000. To date, more than 2,000 investors have pledged over $800,000.

The Neptune Pine is an Android smartphone turned into a watch. Many companies have tried to perfect the concept of a smartwatch while focusing on a sleek and modern design and tethering the watch to another device through Bluetooth technology. What makes the Neptune Pine so unique is that, as Kickstarter explains, the Neptune Pine is a stand-alone device that requires only a micro-SIM card. Neptune Pine has a fully-functioning Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system that is capable of handling quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE and quad-band UMTS/HSPA+/WCDMA, a capacity that means that the phone can be used with most of the world's wireless phone service providers.

Other features of the Neptune Pine include built-in WiFi capabilities, GPS and Bluetooth 4.0. It alsoNeptune+Pinecomes with one USB 2.0 port for connecting to a computer and for charging. Remarkably, this 2.4 inch screen uses the same Qualcomm Snapdragon Dual-Core processor that is typical of many smartphones. It also has the 5MP rear-facing camera and a fully-functioning QWERTY keyboard.

The biggest limitation of this device, which may bother some prospective users, is that the current model will only operate at 2G and 3G speeds. 4G LTE capabilities are already in the works.
