“Media-Nxt,” the annual compendium examining emerging technologies that are disrupting the media industry, was released today by the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University.
The report, researched and written by Newhouse School students under the auspices of the Newhouse Center for Digital Media Entrepreneurship, explores six emerging media technologies: Synthetic Influencers, Live Social Streaming, Hearables, Content Authentication, Emotion-Detecting Technology and New Media Devices.
The report also includes a curated list of 29 early-stage media technology startups, providing media executives with potential partnership, investment or acquisition opportunities.
“The media industry has been high-tech for more than 20 years, but 2019 is the first year media fully assumed that mantel and is finally acting like a high-tech industry,” says Sean Branagan, the center’s director. “Constant innovation, increased R&D, endless disruption, mergers and acquisitions, and new skills and roles for media professionals: This is the new normal.”
This is the third annual “Media-Nxt” report. The inaugural report, released in 2017, provided an overview of six emerging technologies that were already beginning to change the industry, plus four other technologies that were following fast-behind. The theme of the 2018 report was Combinatorial Innovation: creatively combining technologies to solve media industry problems and create opportunities.
Of the 65 startups featured in the 2017 and 2018 reports, eight have already been acquired by companies such as Apple, Adobe, Baidu, LivePerson and Ticketmaster, and 23 other startups have received follow-on funding totalling more than $275 million, according to Branagan.
