A few days ago Yahoo published an article about Leave It To Beaver actor Tony Dow, who now makes his living as a sculptor. The article mentions how Dow decided to retire from acting after a young 28-year-old TV executive asked him during an audition if knew how to do comedy.

I offered my opinion about this in the "Commentary" for this article, and have since received a whopping 1500 "thumbs-up" in response - along with 62 additional worded replies – and those numbers continue to grow! This is clearly representative of how increasingly weary audiences are becoming with the lack of quality in new television programming. It's a sad state – but according to those "thumbs-up," and with wonderful networks like The Hallmark Channel, GMC, and INSP, there is hope. So let's keep the momentum going…and growing.

Meanwhile, below is the comment I posted, followed by a particularly interesting "reply comment" from a fellow reader, as well as a link to the original article itself.

And please feel free to add your comment not only to the Yahoo article, but here, too, at this Classic TV Blog at MediaBizBloggeers.com.

HJP: "That response from that TV executive [asking Dow if he's ever done comedy before] is so typical of the reasons why there is so much crap on TV today. The people running the networks have no clue as to what true quality programming is...and what's required to bring it off."

Fellow Reader in Reply: "I work in the Entertainment field. The main reason Herbie's statement is TRUE is because the industry has turned into a…caste system based on cronyism. The days where you get hired based on you merit and hard work are behind us, now are the days who you are born to and who you know. They depend on focus groups and polls rather than taking a chance on talent."
