Shortly before the start of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel's fifth and final season, Behind the Scenes in Hollywood host Juan Ayala talked with two of the newest cast members on the show, Reid Scott and Jason Ralph. They shared their experiences building their roles from recurring in season four to main cast members in season five, as well as some of the biggest lessons they've learned while in production and how the show has championed breaking the glass ceiling and telling powerful, female-driven stories.
"Something that this show has done a really incredible job of is taking issues that are still modern and important and setting it in a time that makes you think differently," said Scott, who plays late-night talk show host Gordon Ford. "It shows you how far we've come in a lot of ways, but also how far we have to go. We think so many things have changed since the 1960s, but at the same time maybe nothing has. I think film and television are having this long-overdue renaissance of digging into these bigger issues. We may feel they are micro-issues, but they are impacting our world on a macro scale."
"The revolutionary thing about it is that we're getting to show the perspective from women," added Ralph, who plays talent booker Mike Carr. "Having a show written by, produced by, directed by and edited by women helps provide that new perspective. It's crazy that it took so long but it's so cool that we're here."
Editor's note: Juan also interviewed Maisel stars Tony Shalhoub, Kevin Pollak and Michael Zegen. You'll find that video here.
The fifth and final season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is currently streaming on Prime Video.
