Emmy-winning star of stage and screen Loretta Devine joins us to talk about her new movie, A Snowy Day in Oakland, in which she plays the hilarious local gossip Jeanette. Oakland sports an all-star cast including Nicole Ari Parker, Michael Jai White, Kimberly Elise, Tony Plana, Keith David and Jackée Harry.

"The movie used to be called Head Shop, where a woman introduces therapy into her hometown, and it remains that way … but it became something different when it was changed to A Snowy Day in Oakland," Devine explains. "It's a comedy, and a drama, and a love story, so you get a little bit of everything.

"When [Jeanette] says 'Black people don’t go to therapy, they go to God,’ they know that’s the truth," she says with a laugh. "It's an absolute joy."

Asked if she drew inspiration from the women in her own life to play her larger-than-life character, Devine replies, "I was surrounded by women who were very powerful and hungry for life all the time. My mom named me Loretta after Loretta Young, so I assumed I’d have to be acting somewhere. I grew up in such an active community, like what we see in this [film]."

A Snowy Day in Oakland, from PoC Studios, opens in theaters on March 17.
