Jack Myersinterviews Webby Awards Executive Director David-Michel Davies

Jack: Please describe the new Webby media awards?

David-Michel: There are three new categories – Best Use of Online Media, Best Use of Social Media, and Best Integrated Media Plan. We are honoring brands and media companies that demonstrate exceptional creative combined with sophisticated media planning strategy to reach online audiences in the most effective, innovative ways. The Best Integrated Media Plan honors campaigns that include media buys and placements over three different media types, one of which must be online. In addition to online, other media types can include print, outdoor, TV, guerilla or radio. The Best Use of Social Media Award recognizes most creative use of online social media -- websites, applications, APIs, plug-ins, etc -- within an advertising or marketing campaign, while the Best Use of Online Media Award honors the most creative use of a website or online tools -- applications, games, micro-sites, online ads, social media, wallpaper, icons, etc. – integrated into a media/marketing strategy.

Jack: Why is honoring media creativity so important to the industry?

David-Michel: Brands are using online media and social media in increasingly innovative and sophisticated ways, but the media strategy behind these campaigns is rarely recognized. We felt it was important to honor excellence in this category in order to identify best practices and set benchmarks for the industry.
