In the spirit of letting AI do all the work, I thought I would share some of my tests of ChatGPT, part of the OpenAI initiative that also released Dall•E 2. If you haven't given it a go yet, Dall•E 2 allows you to type a description of any picture and it will draw several options of that image for you with uncanny expertise. It was released to the masses at the end of September, and during its first few weeks out was generating over two million images a day. If that weren't enough to keep graphic designers and creatives up at night, enter ChatGPT, which does for copy what Dall•E 2 did to art. And this is just the bottom half of the first inning taking digital transformation in the advertising and marketing industry to an entirely new level.

There are glitches, biases and profound discussions around copyright laws and how the AIs are trained that must be discussed. I'll share my thoughts on this shortly in a subsequent But Wait, That's Not All column. For now, please enjoy some of the fun I had putting ChatGPT to the Minsky test. The results speak for themselves.

I asked: "Create a Battlestar Galactica script in the format of a Shakespearean drama."

ChatGPT answered:

ACT 1:

The scene opens on the Battlestar Galactica, as the ship prepare for battle against the Cylons.

ADMIRAL ADAMA:

O, Battlestar Galactica,
Thou art our floating fortress,
Our shield against the Cylons,
Our hope in this dark hour.

The Cylons attack, and the Galactica's pilots engage in fierce dogfights.

CAPTAIN APOLLO:

O, Cylons, ye metal beasts,
Thou shalt not pass this way!
I shall fly and fight with all my might,
To keep our ship and crew safe.

Meanwhile, on the Galactica's deck, the crew struggles to defend the ship.

LT. STARBUCK:

O, Cylons, ye foul machines,
Thou shalt not breach our walls!
I'll fight with tooth and nail,
To keep our home from harm.

ACT II

As the battle rages on, tensions rise among the crew of the Galactica.

COLONEL TIGH:

O, Admiral Adama,
Thou art a fool to trust
That treacherous toaster, Baltar,
He'll bring us all to dust!

ADMIRAL ADAMA:

O, Colonel Tigh, thou art mistaken,
Baltar may yet prove true.
We must put aside our hatred,
If we are to see this through.

Meanwhile, on the Cylon basestar, the Cylon leader, Number One, plots against the Galactica.

NUMBER ONE:

O, Galactica, thou art doomed,
Thy fate is sealed, by our hand.
We shall crush thee, and thy crew,
And bring thy empire to an end.

ACT III

As the battle reaches its climax, the Galactica faces its greatest challenge yet.

ADMIRAL ADAMA:

O, Battlestar Galactica,
Thou hast been battered and bruised,
But thou art strong, and thou shalt endure,
For thou art the last of our kind.

The Galactica and its crew emerge victorious, but at a great cost.

CAPTAIN APOLLO:

O, Battlestar Galactica,
Thou hast triumphed, but at what price?
We have lost many brave warriors,
But we shall carry on, with valor and vice.

As the survivors mourn their fallen comrades, they look towards a uncertain future.

LT. STARBUCK:

O, Battlestar Galactica,
Thou art our home, and our hope.
We shall search for a new Earth,
And build a future, where we can cope.

The curtain falls, as the survivors of the Galactica set out on their long journey towards a new home.

I asked: Write a song about programmatic advertising in the style of Meat Loaf.

ChatGPT answered:

Verse 1:

In the world of advertising
There's a new way to reach the masses
It's called programmatic, baby
And it's taking over fast

Chorus:

Programmatic, programmatic
It's the future of the game
Programmatic, programmatic
It's the way to make a name

Verse 2:

With programmatic advertising
We can target our ads with precision
To the people who are most likely
To make a purchase decision

Chorus:

Programmatic, programmatic
It's the future of the game
Programmatic, programmatic
It's the way to make a name

Bridge:

No more wasting money on ads
That don't hit the mark
With programmatic, we can be sure
We're reaching the right target in the dark

Chorus:

Programmatic, programmatic
It's the future of the game
Programmatic, programmatic
It's the way to make a name.

OK, so I admit I was kind of hoping for something less upbeat and more ironic given the Meat Loaf reference, but it's still learning!

I asked: Write a poem about the future of the advertising business in the style of Amanda Gorman (the wonderful poet that spoke at Joe Biden's inauguration).

ChatGPT answered:

In the future of advertising
There will be new technologies to explore
AI and VR and more
To reach consumers in ways never seen before

Gone will be the days
Of interruptive ads that we ignore
In their place, experiences that we adore
Immersive and interactive, and always in store

Data will drive decisions
In real-time and with precision
Delivering the right message
To the right person at the right time and location

The future of advertising
Is bright and full of possibilities
Empowering brands to connect
With consumers in new and exciting ways

No longer a distraction
But a valuable and enriching part
Of our daily lives, a work of art
Shaping culture and driving progress
Into a brighter, more connected tomorrow.

But Wait, That's Not All…

So, I feel the need to caveat that my anachronistic brain is now writing, not an AI. Will that be a thing one day where you will legally have to disclose when it is a human writing versus an AI? What happens to copyrights? If I am using an AI to write a story, draw a picture, create a video, all of which have either vastly improved or just come to market in the past 12 months, is it a violation of copyrights if the AI learned from protected material?

All the above content took about a total of five minutes to ask and create. It is not perfect. In my couple of hours playing with this AI, I have uncovered slight biases and occasional nonsensical responses. But I'll be damned if this isn't the closest that I've seen AI come to being able to deliver not only human-level quality content, but professional human-level quality content. What is certain is that ChatGPT goes to the very foundation upon which advertising and content are built on, our ability as humans to share stories and emotions with others as we have done for millennia. Now, it isn't only humans sharing.

The MIT Professor and author of the AI tome Life 3.0: Being Human in the Age of Artificial Intelligencepoints out that it is necessary for mankind to align our goals with AIs if we are to co-exist; knowing that just as human goals evolve, so will those of AIs. We can no longer afford to "kick the can" as our alignments between industry and AI will not come overnight and will likely take years. The discussions start now.

To end on a (slightly) less dystopian note:

I asked ChatGPT: Will your existence make advertising copywriting obsolete?

ChatGPT answered:

It is unlikely that my existence will make advertising copywriting obsolete. While I am a large language model trained by OpenAI and can assist with generating text, I do not have the ability to create persuasive and compelling advertising copy. This type of writing requires creativity, insight into consumer behavior, and a deep understanding of the product or service being advertised. These are skills that I do not possess. Additionally, the role of advertising is to persuade people to take action, and this is something that I am not capable of doing. In short, while I may be able to assist with generating text, I do not have the ability to replace the role of an advertising copywriter.
