“Daredevil” Weekend!

In a bit of extremely bad timing, a weekend promised by every weatherperson in the Northeast to be shaping up as the first truly nice one of 2015 will likely not encourage all-day binge-viewing of any kind – just as Netflix drops the first season of what could very well turn out to be its most successful original series to date, “Daredevil.”

I haven’t seen it yet, but as a long-time observer of the Marvel universe and a regular attendee at the San Diego Comic-Con I find that I am looking forward to this show more than any other in this crazy spring season, which is hugely crowded with crowdpleasers. That is especially true this weekend, which in addition to “Daredevil” will also bring with it the season premieres on Sunday of HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” “Veep” and “Silicon Valley.” And next weekend features the season premiere of BBC America’s “Orphan Black.” And AMC’s “Mad Men” is back. Gosh, where were all these great shows during the last two months, when every weekend brought with it yet another terrible storm or a visit from that blasted polar vortex and millions of people were welcoming any excuse they could find to stay indoors?

I haven’t even made it through Netflix’s recent arrival “Bloodline,” a dark family drama that has already staked a claim as one of 2015’s best new series. From what I have seen of it so far I think it is entirely more engrossing than the increasingly campy and bobble headed “House of Cards” and the somewhat played out “Orange is the New Black.” But to each his own.

Anyway, interest in “Daredevil” (a blind superhero, for those who don't know, played by Charlie Cox of "Boardwalk Empire") is sky high right now because the series exists in the same space and time as the last “Avengers” movie and ABC’s “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” and because it is the first of five Marvel series set to debut on Netflix during the next two or three years. It will be followed by series featuring the characters Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage, all leading up to “The Defenders,” which will unite all four of these characters and perhaps feature other Marvel favorites.

Here’s hoping future Marvel characters stay on Netflix, where they belong, and not on ABC, where the ill-focused “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” and the bland “Marvel’s Agent Carter” have been big disappointments.
