With the increased diversity and representation across Disney’s properties, from animation to Marvel and Star Wars titles, their next hero to tackle the small screen is Moon Girl in the upcoming Disney Channel animated series Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur. Joining us to talk all about the energetic, loveable and genius titular hero is her voice actor, actress and singer Diamond White.
Diamond was among the thousands of young actresses who auditioned for the role. After several rounds got the call informing her that she would be joining the ever-growing Marvel family by giving voice to Lunella, aka Moon Girl -- Marvel’s first African American teen girl superhero. "I cried," she recalled of receiving the news. "It was unbelievable, I called my mom and were both just screaming over the phone."
In the new series, Lunella, a genius 13-year-old, discovers the notes of a missing scientist and, while deciphering them, accidentally opens a time vortex that lets in a massive red Tyrannosaurus Rex. After discovering it obeys her commands like a loyal guard dog, the two fight to protect their beloved Lower East Side neighborhood from looming threats. They include the electricity wielding Aftershock, voiced by Alison Brie, in the premiere episode.
Lunella is surrounded by a colorful gallery of characters including family members, friends and super-powered villains. They are voiced by an all-star cast including Alfre Woodard, Jennifer Hudson, Wesley Snipes, Daveed Diggs, Wilson Cruz, Michael Cimino and Laurence Fishburne, who also serves as executive producer.
"One girl can make a difference. One person can make a difference," Diamond explained of what she hopes audiences take away from the series. "Lunella's superpower is her brain. So, use your brain, don't let things get you down, and don't let people be the villains of your story because you can make a difference in your community and environment."
Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur premieres Friday, February 10 at 8 p.m. ET on Disney Channel.
