Glee Forgets About the Music - Jeanine Poggi

Glee listened to us. In its Season 3 premiere Tuesday night, the show brought back story arches and character depth, two elements that were severely missing in its sophomore season.

With many of the Gleeks now in their senior year at McKinley High, the season premiere set up the plight of core-cast nicely: Rachel and Kurt are desperately seeking a way into the New York City musical theater world, Finn has no idea what he wants for his future and Quinn is rebelling against the polyester cheerleading uniform.

Glee creator Ryan Murphy finally found a direction for the New Directions, hoping to correct much of the indecisiveness and flailing about of Season 2.

But what happened to the music? When we said we were tired of episodes that centered around a music genre or artists, we didn't mean to put the singing on the back burner.

The song list was paltry, with just five songs that failed to inspire. From "Ding, Dong the Witch Is Dead" to "It's Not Unusual," it was hard to figure out how these songs exactly fit with the episode.

The only performance even worth downloading wasn't even performed by the McKinley High gang. The "Anything Goes/Anything You Can Do" mashup was sung by Glee Project finalist Lindsay Pearce and was the only reminder of why the show became popular in the first place.

Glee'soriginality stemmed from its ability to seamlessly combine show-stopping singing with thought-provoking and an often quirky story line. While that story has become a bit more compelling, Glee has lost its musicality. For more television news visit Too Much To TiVo.
