One of television's most influential leaders explains why the next great creative revolution won't replace human judgment -- it will depend on it.

Over the past three decades, few executives have had a greater influence on modern television than Kevin Reilly. From NBC and FX to Fox, Turner, and HBO Max, he helped shape the careers of extraordinary creators while championing landmark series including ER, The Sopranos, The Office, 30 Rock, Friday Night Lights, Empire, and Glee. Today, as CEO of Kartel, he has once again placed himself at the leading edge of industry transformation, this time where artificial intelligence, creativity, marketing, and commerce converge.
I've had the privilege of interviewing Kevin several times over the years as our industry navigated one technological shift after another. What has always distinguished him is that he rarely talks about technology for its own sake. He talks about people -- how they adapt, how organizations resist change, and how great leadership requires seeing around corners before everyone else does.
That perspective made for one of the most engaging conversations Tim Spengler and I have shared on Lead Human.
Rather than looking backward at a remarkable career, Kevin looks ahead. His move from programming some of television's most iconic series to leading an AI-powered creative company isn't a departure from his life's work. In many ways, it is its logical continuation.
"I was always fascinated with the intersection between culture and commerce," Kevin tells us. "That is also at the core of what we do."
That observation becomes the foundation for a wide-ranging discussion about why Hollywood is structurally changing, why marketing and creative development are beginning to reconnect after decades of separation, and why AI finally makes that integration possible.
As Kevin explains, "AI actually is the product to bring this integration that I believed was coming."
His optimism is balanced by realism. Organizations have always struggled to adapt, and today's AI transformation is no exception. Those that simply layer new technology onto old operating models, he believes, will struggle to compete with organizations willing to rethink how creativity, data, media, and commerce work together.
His warning is unmistakable.
"I believe very firmly those that don't move in that direction won't be here."
Yet the most compelling moments in our conversation are not about technology at all. They are about the uniquely human capabilities that become more valuable as intelligent systems become more capable. When asked what separates successful leaders in an AI-powered world, Kevin repeatedly returns to mindset, curiosity, and judgment.
"When you can generate 200 creative variations in an hour, the decision about what not to do becomes just as important as what to do," he says before adding the phrase that perfectly captures the Lead Human philosophy: "It's discernment and judgment."
For anyone leading an organization, building a career, creating brands, or simply trying to understand where media, marketing, and artificial intelligence are headed, Kevin offers a rare perspective shaped by decades of leading through disruption rather than observing it.
Our conversation explores why Hollywood is shrinking even as creativity expands, how AI is reshaping both entertainment and advertising, what young professionals should be doing differently today, and why Kevin believes the next generation of opportunity will belong to leaders who learn to integrate technology without surrendering human judgment.
I hope you'll take the time to watch or listen to the full conversation. It's one of the most thoughtful discussions we've had on Lead Human, and I think you'll come away with a deeper appreciation not only for where our industries are headed, but for the enduring role that human leadership will continue to play.
