Looking through Twitter today I came upon a tweet from Jared Padalecki, star of the long-running series "Supernatural" on The CW. It was clearly a video; at first pass I thought he must be talking about an upcoming episode of his show. Then I saw the hashtag #AllDayBreakfast and the handle, @McDonalds.

Is Padalecki promoting McDonald's, I wondered? Can it be that a fit TV star who has maintained his looks since his humble beginnings in the business way back on The WB's "Gilmore Girls" actually eats there? More to the point, the tweet did not have the word "Promoted" at the bottom, as do all formal ads on Twitter. I was intrigued. (Click on the tweet below to see the video.)

Apparently this wasn't Padalecki's first McDonald's-driven tweet. Here's another from a few days ago. It does not feature a video.

Sure enough, the tweet proved to be a commercial apparently made specifically for Twitter (or for social media in general) in which Padalecki tells his fan base (and anyone else who sees it) how grateful he is to have access at any time to McDonald's All Day Breakfast menu. This is especially true when he isn't shooting "Supernatural" in Vancouver and is at his home in Austin, TX, where he is very involved with his family and his responsibilities as a small-business owner. He is so busy taking his kids to school, studying scripts, running the business and exercising that he sometimes goes without food until early afternoon when, as seen in the video, a coffee and an order of "hotcakes" from McDonald's hits the spot. (Note the "hotcakes" in the image below.)

The video shows Padalecki in his home, with his kids and at work -- often with a cup of McDonald's coffee in hand -- and assuming all that footage was shot on location (as is implied) the intimacy of it all must be irresistible to his millions of fans. If the 2.3 million of them who follow him on Twitter alone dash out to their local McD's and order "hotcakes" it will give the beleaguered fast-food giant a much-needed boost in sales. (Check out what Stuart Elliott recently had to say on this subject.) It might also send a few more folks to his bar, the San Jac Saloon, which gets a nice little plug as well.
