2011 was a big year for Smartphones. Wireless research firm Vision Mobile has released its 2011 Global Smartphone and OS Study. The news is particularly good for Google's Android Operating System (OS), expanding its global market share from 42% to 49% in a single year. Apple also performed well- earning more than $32 billion in PROFIT, a sum greater than the GDPof 2/3 of all countries on the planet. The year was less pleasant for the two former market leaders, Nokia and RIM (Blackberry). Nokia shed more than half of their Smartphone market penetration, while RIM shaved off billions in shareholder value, tumbling from $60 per share last January to under $13 this week.
