TV Maven Live: Comment on the MTV VMAs

9:05 p.m.: Did that really happen? I wanted to laugh at Britney Spears' performance, but my mouth was dropped so low to the floor that it made laughing impossible. The entire time, the expression on her face resembled that of a person who has just seen a ghost. Britney obviously didn't sing. Her hair looked like it was falling out. That was no comeback. That was scary.

9:09 p.m.:Oh Sarah Silverman. I love her, but the crowd definitely didn't seem to enjoy her opening monologue. I think everyone was wondering, "You are ripping on Britney and she's right backstage." No one likes Britney, but even that was a little rough. Hopefully Sarah's quips will improve throughout the night. P.S. What is with Paris Hilton's hair?

9:16 p.m.: Nothing is wowing me yet. In fact, I'm bored already and contemplating switching over to my HGTV Design Star TiVo.

9:24 p.m.:My boyfriend is at band practice and I promised him I'd record Britney's performance. Somehow I accidentally deleted it. So I went on YouTube, figuring someone must have already put it on there. The rest of the world must be thinking like me, because YouTube just took forever to load. Look how Britney affects the world!

9:33 p.m.:Why did the Foo Fighters perform in a hotel room, or wherever that was? The performances are always the best part of the MTV Video Music Awards. Having a renowned band like the Foo Fighters perform in a tiny room seemed somewhat demeaning to their talent, but at the same time, it just wasn't any fun to watch. Anyone remember when Blink-182 closed the VMAs with all the little people running around? That's what the VMAs is supposed to be about.

9:36 p.m.: Beyonce is bad at thank you speeches? I think she's had enough practice that she could be a littttle better. Boring.

9:42 p.m.: Justin Timberlake was dancing to rap music. Enough said.

9:42 p.m.: I kind of wish Rosario Dawson was performing instead of announcing a performance. She was so awesome in RENT. That girl can sing! ...and that's the last time I'll let my true dorkiness shine through.

9:47 p.m.: Is Sarah Silverman going to come back at all?

9:49 p.m.:The only reason I'm staying tuned through the 8-hour long commercial break is because The Hills girls are coming up next to present. And we all know that I love The Hills.

9:50 p.m.:Poor Hayden Panettiere. Stuck in the fan lounge and not at the actual show. Doesn'tHeroes make you famous enough to actually get a seat?

9:57 p.m.: Is it just me or does Lauren Conrad look like it's the worst thing in the world to be presenting at the VMAs? Life must be oh so difficult for her.

9:59 p.m.: Wow. JT. Way to say what everyone's always been thinking... MTV, show more videos!!! But, to do it with The Hills girls standing next to him? Ouch!

10:05 p.m.:Apparently it wasn't enough said. Justin Timberlake dancing to rap - part two. Seriously?

10:08 p.m.: Shia LaBeouf has a mustache. Just saying.

10:24 p.m.: Very bored right now. Aren't the MTV awards supposed to be the most fun awards show? Thank God for the Entourage boys. But really, is anyone else falling asleep watching this?

10:29 p.m.: Foo Fighters performed with the singer from System of a Down, covering a Dead Kennedys song... MTV finally showed it hails more than just the z100 artists. And, it's a hell of a lot better than Fallout Boy playing a Rihanna song.

10:33 p.m.: Alicia Keys is lovely and talented... but is Nelly drunk?

10:40 p.m.: Is it bad that I really hope this show ends on time?

10:46 p.m.: Jamie Foxx - the king of shameless plugs.

10:47 p.m.: Gym Class Heroes wins Best New Group. Again, someone please explain to me what they're doing at some Fallout Boy party instead of inside the event to accept their award? I don't get the point of this setup at all.

10:40 p.m.:Ahhhh they actually had the dumb Miss Teen girl on. Wow. She actually made herself appear even worse! Looks like she has some really good PR people behind her.

10:59 p.m.:Video of The Year goes to Rihanna. (She looks like a mermaid in that pink dress.) Does this mean the show is about to end?

11:02 p.m.:We're past the real ending time. I can forgive that - when does any awards show end on time? All I ask is that JT's performance really be end-of-show worthy. The final performances (like the previously mentioned one from Blink-182) of the VMAs used to be legendary. That has slowly become less and less true with each year. How will JT measure up?

11:06 p.m.:P.S. What happened to Kid Rock earlier? Did he really get thrown out for starting a fight? If only they showed the behind-the-scenes drama. Maybe he and Tommy Lee went at it over Pam Anderson.

11:08 p.m.: Did JT just dance into a wall?

11:09 p.m.:This will only be good if Britney comes out to join Justin. But maybe Sarah Silverman hurt her feelings too badly early on. Nah, she's probably still there. I mean, c'mon, it's not like she'd go home to tuck her kids into bed.

11:13 p.m.:As one of the MTV VJs said, "It all started with the return of Britney Spears..." Yes, it did. But that's also where it all ended.

Sadly, the move from NYC to Las Vegas did not help the MTV Video Music Awards. Another year, another let down.
