This week the sports world lost two icons. Eleven-time NBA champion and five-time MVP Bill Russell passed away peacefully at the age of 88 on Sunday, and Vin Scully, arguably the greatest play-by-play broadcaster of all time, did the same at the age of 94 Wednesday morning. These two will forever be remembered as legends who were at the top of their profession and inspired so many people to chase their dreams and not be afraid to go down in the history books. Russell was known off the court as one of the premier civil rights activists in sports while also having one of the best laughs ever heard, and Scully was invited into sports fans homes for years with his soothing voice and comforting ambiance. Justin Paura reflects on what both icons meant to the sports world and beyond.
