"Roswell, New Mexico" Star Nathan Parsons on Playing an Actual Alien

When it came to creating Max Parsons admits that he and his costars were given carte blanche by the seriesamp8217 producers although there were stringent guidelines to which they were told they must adhere amp160amp8220It was really up to the three of usamp8221 he said speaking of Lily Cowlesamp160and Michael Vlamis who also play aliensashumans Isobel and Michael respectively amp160amp8220We sat down with the show39s creator Carina Adly Mackenzie and really talked about what it was like and what it meant to be an alien in our world here amp160We aren39t the original series and we are drawing from the books so what does that look like amp160How are we going to play that out and what scifi things can we add inamp8220But we always wanted to make sure we went back to that human elementamp8221 he continued amp160amp8220While we are aliens we have been amp8216humanamp8217 for 20 years amp160The dichotomy of what we live with day to day is really a part of why the three of us are so close and why there is an unbreakable bondamp160 It39s literally the three of us against the universeamp8221The first step for Parsons in creating Max was to read the Roswell High booksamp160 amp160amp8220It always goes back to the source materialamp8221 he explainedamp160 amp8220Melinda Metz wrote a wonderful series of books and our job is to honor that and bring them to life Carina would highlight passages for me just to get insight into something like amp8216What is it like to bring someone back to lifeamp8217 amp160Melina talked about that in the books and describes it in the firsthand experience amp160The books were wonderful sources to draw fromamp8221On the surface Max may appear gentle yet Parsons said that if people dig deep enough they might feel less assured that it39s a real character traitamp160 amp8220You have to keep in mind this is a man who39s been lying for 20 years and has become very good at itamp8221 he said amp160amp8220It doesn39t mean he39s a bad person but thereamp8217s so much room in there to explore things like what has he had to do to survive amp160What has he had to do to protect his family amp160Why is he so hesitant to open up to Liz Jeanine Mason and be honest with her amp160There are 20 years of lies and abilities that nobody fully understands not even Maxamp8221For the Australian born Texasraised actor feeling like a fish out of water isnamp8217t exactly an alien concept amp160It was his experience when his American parents moved back to the United States amp160amp8220Having parents that were American helped but I moved here at a young age and my accent was all over the placeamp8221 he recalledamp8220When I left high school I had to sit with my acting coach and learn how to speak normal American because I had a halfdrawl AustralianTexan accentamp8221 he continuedamp160 amp8220It was a weird drawl but it was how I talked and I39m sure people were confused and thought I was making it upamp160 I had to sit down and study a standard American accentamp160 Now after a few too many pints people start to ask what39s happening as my accent will start going all over the place again amp160Playing Ethan Lovett an Australian for three years on General Hospital which was one of my first jobs I had to forget all the training I39d just doneamp8221While each genre character Parsons has played holds a special place in his heart itamp8217s Max that stands out amp160amp8220Max would have to be my favorite because in my mind he is so complexamp8221 he explainedamp160 amp8220Jackson on The Originals was fun but he was the safe husband amp160James was fun in his own way with Lafayette on True Blood amp160I loved that character and until this he was probably my favorite amp160Max seems so much more rounded because there39s this whole hidden life and origin and thatamp8217s something so fun to explore for meamp8221Roswell New Mexico is telecast Tuesdays at 9 pm on The CWClick on the social media tiles above or below to share this content with your friends and colleaguesThe opinions and points of view expressed in this commentary are exclusively those of the author andor subjects and do not necessarily represent the views of MediaVillagecomMyersBizNet Inc management or associated bloggersamp160amp160
