FXX's "Dave" Shows Us How Dope the World Can Be

On the surface Daveamp8217s onscreen story isnamp8217t much different than what youamp8217d expect amp160amp160Dave is a rapper who goes by the stage name Lil Dicky amp160His raps and alias fit the satirical nature of his overall persona which itself is a comment on the stereotypically aggressive and sexual nature of hardcore hiphop and modern day traptype music or as he puts it in the show amp8220a superintellectual commentary on hyper masculinityamp8221 amp160Heamp8217s got a group of close friends which includes his girlfriend Ally Taylor Misiak his childhood friendengineer Elz Travis amp8220Tacoamp8221 Bennet of Odd Future fame his roommate and eventual manager Mike Andrew Santino and his hype man Gata all of whom more or less support his dream of becoming the worldamp8217s greatest rapper amp160The only thing stopping him is amp8230 well nothing amp160Iamp8217ll get to thatSee rappers playing some version of themselves at some point in their respective lives goes all the way back to Fresh Prince of Bel Air amp160More recently weamp8217ve seen Awkwafina do it in Awkwafina is Nora from Queens and a couple years ago rapper Kyle or amp8220Drake Liteamp8221 as I like to refer to him starred in a Netflix movie called The After Party that wasnamp8217t technically about his life but was close enough amp160In Fresh Prince Will Smith played a prerap money version of himself that would never see even a fraction of the professional success that reallife Will saw amp160Same thing goes for Awkwafina who also plays a prefame version of herself thatamp8217s displayed literally none of the musical or acting talent that her reallife persona would eventually build a career on amp160Dave on the other and has simply turned back the clock so to speakDaveamp8217s Dave is definitely a representation of an actual time in Dickyamp8217s life but itamp8217s also filtered through the supposed ridiculousness of his professional endeavors amp160Of course he doesnamp8217t fit the amp8220understoodamp8221 bill rapwise amp160Heamp8217s white Jewish from the suburbs and his rap name is a literal joke amp160These are things that seem like potential hurdles for Dave and in pretty much every episode they are but the difference is that he can actually rap his ass off amp160His talents prevail in the end or at least they feel like they willWhen not focused on Dickyamp8217s professional ahem rise each episode defaults to subject matter thatamp8217s usually surprisingly personal and emotionally honest amp160Besides all the insecurity that Dave feels about his rap hurdles he also deals with the anxieties of real life amp160So far issues like grief sex and mental health have been dealt with in a way that felt really genuine and endearing and theyamp8217ve done so without getting so heavy that it sucked the fun out of whatever episode that dealt with themamp160 Specifically episodes three and five titled amp8220Hypospadiasamp8221 and amp8220Hype Manamp8221 respectively put the showamp8217s true emotional maturity on display which is an epic feat considering how silly most of the showamp8217s content is amp160I mean in the show Dickyamp8217s hit single is called amp8220My Dick Sucksamp8221 amp160Doesnamp8217t get any sillier than thatAll silliness aside itamp8217s Daveamp8217s innate authenticity that pushes it over the edge amp160Gata is actually Daveamp8217s reallife confidant both on and offstage and like his character on the show claims he really has worked with artists like Lil Wayne and Tyga amp160Mike is based on a real dude Mike Hertz who manages both Dicky and Gata amp160Add to that cameos from legit rappers like YG Young Thug and Trippie Redd along with his Curb Your Enthusiasmstyle observations and general Millennial anxieties and the result is a very relatable and fun experience with the perfect soundtrack to matchAt the end of the day is Dave revolutionizing the visual feel and format of the modernday sitcom amp160Not really but itamp8217s got a similar style and cadence to that of Nora and Broad City which is more than enoughamp160amp160Dave is telecast Wednesday at 10 pm on FXX Click the social buttons above or below to share this content with your friends and colleaguesThe opinions and points of view expressed in this content are exclusively the views of the author andor subjects and do not necessarily represent the views of MediaVillagecomMyersBizNet Inc management or associated writersamp160amp160
