There is a question that has been asked in every serious rehearsal room for the past hundred years, from Moscow to Burbank: what do you want in this scene? Not what do you do. What do you want? The doing follows from the wanting, and if the wanting is not there, the audience feels it. They may not be able to say how they know; they just know.
