"Roseanne," "The Talk": Sara Gilbert Is the Master of Multi-tasking

With The Talk now in itamp8217s eighth season Gilbert is thankful to be able to loosen the reigns a little on the show she cocreated affording her the time to be able to do a variety of things amp160quotI was very handson with it in the beginningquot she shared amp160quotBut over time I39ve kind of stepped back and can let others run itquot amp160The fact the amp8220newamp8221 Roseanne shotamp160right next door to The Talk39s soundstage helpedamp160 quotThat made it really easyquot Gilbert laughed amp160quotIn terms of the schedule there was a night where after a taping of Roseanne I had to skip the curtain call to make a taping of Living Biblically amp160It was a crazy few months and I will say now things are getting a little more back to normalamp160 Iamp8217m getting to see my kids morequotIn the reboot Gilbert39s character Darlene Connor moves home with her two kids both for economic reasons and to look after her parents Roseanne and Dan so stepping back into her amp8220old homeamp8221 after 20 years was both quotsurreal and naturalquot and felt like no time had passed amp160quotIt was like going back to elementary school kind of like amp8216Oh I39m a student againamp8217amp8221 she explainedHowever she wasn39t surprised by the set itself amp160As an executive producer of the rebootamp160she was handson with the painstaking effort taken to recreate it right down to that infamous afghandraped couch amp160quotBecause I was producing the show it was important that we maintained a lot of the original feeling so I was looking at wallpapers and carpetsamp8221 she saidamp160 quotPretty much nothing is originalamp160 It39s all recreated amp160We found the plans to the set so we knew all of the dimensions and beyond that it was a lot of recreatingquot amp160Still it was the Conner couch that proved the biggest obstacle for production amp160quotWe did find the original couchquot she notedamp160 quotBut it39s in the Smithsonian and there were too many stipulations on having a guard with itamp160who had to be there on days that we were shooting just things like that so it wasn39t going to work out in terms of productionquotWhen it comes to the Roseanne reboot she appreciates the stakes are high and didn39t want to do anything to tarnish the original39s legacy amp160quotThis was something none of us wanted to let anybody down withquot she explainedamp160 amp8220So the stakes were really high and I think that motivated me to make sure that the bar stayed really high amp160Luckily I had a great partnership with Roseanne Barr pictured above right with Gilbert and Tom Werner so there was a group of us basically on quality control and that39s essentially what you39re trying to do to make sure it39s as good as it wasquotDuring it39s run Roseanne was one of the most groundbreaking shows of its time and like the set and cast of this nineepisode reboot nothing has changed amp160quotThe show was always forwardthinking and covered a lot of topics before people were really talking about themquot Gilbert recalledamp160 amp8220It always tried to push the envelope I think it will continue to do that especially talking about things like healthcare and people having a lack of access to what they need amp160There are a lot of topics covered but if you watch the whole nine episodes you39ll see we don39t shy away from any of itquotOne topic Gilbert was happy to tackle kids exploring gender fluidity something Darlene39s young son Mark Ames McNamara does with his fashion choices much to the chagrin of grandpa Dan John Goodman amp160quotThat was my idea and was very important because we all know kids like thatquot Gilbert saidamp160 quotWe wanted to represent the world and make sure we were giving voices to people that haven39t been represented enough on televisionquotRoseanne is telecast Tuesday at 8 pm on ABCamp160 The Talk is telecast daily on CBSamp160 Living Biblically is telecast Monday at 930 pm on CBSamp160amp160Click the social buttons above or below to share this content with your friends and colleaguesThe opinions and points of view expressed in this content are exclusively the views of the author andor subjects and do not necessarily represent the views of MediaVillagecomMyersBizNet Inc management or associated writers
